There's something happening right now that is in it's infancy. I am not a crank (which is what every crank says) but I believe that we're going through something much more intrusive on our society, globally, than simply a gap in generational sensibilities.

I honest to God believe that we're in what is being referred to by historians as well as theologians as "The Great Emergence." is happening.

In short, a new reformation is taking place around the world. All of what we are, what we thought, what we believe, how we interact with the powers that be, the powers that be themselves, and all manner of institutions both new and ancient, are being called into question.

I think this is something that happens every five hundred years.

It's alarming. It's frustrating. It's scary to wonder at those implications. I'm sure people who went through the protestant reformation felt the same way, because it doesn't just effect religion.

Out of the reformation you had the rise of the city state, the rise individualism, the rise of universal education, protestantism, capitalism, universalism, and so on. The world shuddered under its weight and it wasn't at all pretty.

People are asking questions of the most basic aspect of our lives including things like sexuality and gender. Meanwhile, non-emergent or non-millennials (because it started here) are like WTF - man? What's happening?

Change. Big change. Loud and unapologetic and threatening change is happening. And a lot of it, people are getting wrong or they haven't gotten it quite right yet. That urge is there. That desire.
